This January, we’re taking a break from Neighborhood Groups to offer three classes, each focussed on a topic and a book. We would love for you to sign up and attend one of these four-week classes!
Here are the classes that will be offered this year:
The Covenant of Friendship
Tuesday Nights from 6:30 - 8:00 PM (Jan 15, 22, 29, and Feb 5)
Caroline White
Loneliness is one of the most devastating epidemics of our time. We were not created to be alone. It’s hard enough to admit we’re lonely, but even harder to search for where to go with our longings for close relationships, deep connection, and belonging. God, who is Himself a community of three, has created and revealed to the world in His Word an astounding, powerful, and profound hope: the covenant of friendship. What is a covenant and is friendship covenantal? Where do I find it and how do I sign up? Our culture pays more attention to and finds more hope in romantic love, but does God? Join us as we examine God’s design of friendship, the calling and hope for every one of us there.
For the Beauty of the Church
Wednesday Nights from 6:30 - 8:00 PM (Jan 16, 23, 30, and Feb 6)
Justin Carlson
You would be hard pressed to find a person who has not been moved by a piece of art (music, painting, book, etc.), but what place does art have in the church, if any? Beauty is often an elusive term, but it does stir within us a hunger for something beyond ourselves. Ultimately, we see perfect beauty in the person and work of Christ, and it is something that has glorious implications for our everyday lives, as those made in the image of God. This course will strive for a more robust, expansive vision for the church and the arts. It will explore topics like the image of God, worship, beauty, as well as other things along the way.
Book: For the Beauty of the Church, a collection of essays edited by W. David. O Taylor
From the Mouth of God
Thursday Nights from 6:30 - 8:00 PM (Jan 17, 24, 31, and Feb 7)
Hayden Nesbit
We inhabit a "live your truth" culture with ears always open for truth that will change us. But where do we find truth? The Psalmist says the sum of God’s word is truth. Scripture is the cognitive foundation for our theology; it discloses living knowledge about God, salvation, human nature, and the end for which we were made. It is the “cradle wherein Christ is laid” as Luther said. But can we trust the Bible completely? Is it sufficient for our complicated lives? Can we really know what it teaches? We’ll unpack the reality that all Scripture is God’s truth from God’s mouth—it is sufficient, clear, authoritative, and necessary.
Where will these classes be held?
All three classes will meet at Grace Baptist Church.
What about childcare?
We will offer childcare during these classes, but if you would like to use our childcare, we ask that you also choose a night to be a childcare volunteer during another class.
